I can't even begin to tell you the last time I thought about blogging
but I know I need to keep everyone updated. I had some health issues
before the holidays but I really just wanted to curl up, spend time with
my family and not think about my health. We had an amazing Christmas ♥♥
After the New Year I kept my promises and I made four appointments. I saw my PCP, I saw the OB/GYN, I saw the endocrinologist and I was scheduled to see the dietician. I had so much blood taken that I feel like Dracula's ghoul. My primary care doctor will be moving practices and I will be going with her. Anyone that knows me, knows that you cannot shake me that easily. All of the doctors at the Borgess practice are going to Bronson. She said that she understands why I didn't do any follow ups before the holidays but wants me to follow through now.
We had some shocking news before the holidays on to of everything else that was happening to me. I was sent for an ultrasound and it was found that there were some masses on an ultrasound and they wanted me to have a biopsy before the holidays. I chose to wait until after the holidays. I had enough poking and prodding, my family had gone through enough bullshit and we just needed some peace and some time together.
I met with the OB/GYN and had the biopsy completed. However, during the procedure there was another abnormality found and a second biopsy was completed. It was a horrible evening afterwards. The waiting for the biopsy results was crazy and frustrating. My primary care doctor read the results finally and reported that the biopsy's came back okay but when I returned to the OB/GYN, he reported that one biopsy was good but the other one was not. I am scheduled to have a more in depth outpatient biopsy completed on April 14th. Thankfully they will be putting me under for this procedure and they said it would take a few days to recuperate. We are hoping that this is just an abnormality and nothing more.
I met with the endocrinologist the next day and they are recommending the removal of the rest of my parathyroids. The surgeon will leave a piece of one. My parathyroid level is at 174 when the highest it should be between 15 and 65.
This is what I have: Hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which one or more of the parathyroid glands become overactive and secrete too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). This causes the levels of calcium in the blood to rise, a condition known as hypercalcemia. I've already had one parathyroid removed in April of 1996 and thought it was all fixed.
Hypercalcemia is a condition in which the calcium level in your blood is above normal. Too much calcium in your blood can weaken your bones, create kidney stones, and interfere with how your heart and brain work. Hypercalcemia is usually a result of overactive parathyroid glands.
Currently I am waiting for the appointment for the surgeon to see when I will be having the parathyroid surgery. While things are still in the air and we are finding out more medical information, we are also getting answers.
There is some good news though! My kidney function numbers are increasing. I was at a 60 when I had my blood draws in January and I was at a 49 when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease. If I can go for 6 months and maintain a 60 I will no longer be considered Stage 3 kidney disease. The lower the number, the worse it is for me. Kidney failure happens at 15. I'd like to think that this is due to the change in my diet and the healthier choices that I am making.
